Recover Deleted Data
The loss of important information due to an accidental file deletion can be potentially devastating to everyone involved. Luckily, such accidental deletions are rarely a permanent calamity. The ability to recover deleted data can be found in a wide variety of free software utilities downloadable all over the internet. This ability even applies to data deleted in a number of fashions, not just files lost from the recycling bin. Accidental drive partitioning, and even formating, can be recovered from. Software utilities found commonly on the internet can accomplish most if not all tasks to recover deleted data.
Deleting something accidentally is far easier than even the savvy computer user may think. Although selecting a known important file and specifically deleting it is an unlikely scenario, there are many other ways that such an important file could be lost. Users cleaning up a desktop, or deleting an entire folder, can easily sweep up important files in such a process. Add / Remove program routines can also destroy important files if care is not used during the process. A user other than the owner may potentially delete important files as well.
Accidental disk partitions are also possible, and can easily happen when utilities like FDISK make it extremely simple to do so. Formating of an important drive can happen as well, as hard drives tend to look alike, and selecting the wrong volume on a hard drive is not beyond the realm of imagination either. Any of these actions can lead quickly to a deleted hard drive, and tons of lost information that must be retrieved quickly.
Fortunately, this is one scenario where free utilities can very easily accomplish the needed recovery. The ability to recover deleted files is found in a multitude of free software applications. Perhaps the most comprehensive and well known of these free utilities is the open source TestDisk program. As an open source program, TestDisk can be freely downloaded and used without restriction. Best of all, TestDisk is extremely full featured, operating with a large number of systems. TestDisk can operate in both Windows and Linux environments, and with a variety of file formats.
When a file is deleted by the user, it actually remains intact on the hard drive. When a program like TestDisk goes to recover deleted data, it simply finds the deleted file and saves it from being overwritten. Deleted data is not instantly erased, but instead remains on the drive until the space is needed by another file. This makes it very important that users immediately act to recover their lost data. The odds of being able to recover deleted data drop rapidly as time passes, and the operating system looks for a place to put new files or data.
