Macintosh File Recovery
The loss of an important file due to data corruption or accidental deletion can be a devastating blow, especially if that file is important financially or personally. The loss of data can occur more easily than you might think, given all the possible causes of these failures. Both software and hardware malfunctions can result in lost data, but fortunately, this data can usually be recovered without too much trouble. With easy to use file recovery tools, these lost files can be retrieved without too much trouble. This is true for all systems on the market today, including Macintosh file recovery.
Given that a file is deleted accidentally, the scenario for recovery is typically not very complicated. When a file is accidentally deleted, the operating system marks it as a writable section of memory. When more storage space is needed, the operating system revisits this section of memory and writes over it. This means that when the original deletion occurs, nothing has actually been done to the file. The file remains on the hard drive, intact, waiting to be overwritten. If the user can recover this file before more space is needed, then the information is usually recoverable intact.
Macintosh file recovery is no different than PC based recovery in this regard. Recovering files lost on a Mac is simply a matter of finding recovery programs that will function on the platform. TestDisk is one widely used solution when cross platform compatability is a must. TestDisk has been developed by the community for several years as an open source project, and therefore enjoys a great degree of flexibility and packs quite a few features. When looking for free Macintosh file recovery programs, a user is hard pressed to do any better than the TestDisk utility.
When attempting to recover a file, act quickly, and avoid saving or creating any new files. This will ensure that the old file remains untouched. This is especially important on hard drives that may be low on space. In these situations, it is more likely that the operating system will select the important file to be overwritten. If file recovery cannot be attempted immediately, shut down the computer. If the file recovery software must first be downloaded and installed, consider doing so on another computer.
Once TestDisk or another free Macintosh file recovery utility has been installed, a simple scan of the hard drive should reveal the important file that needs to be recovered. Should the file fail to appear, a segment of it may have already been overwritten. In this case, perform a RAW recovery attempt. This will bypass drive partitions and simply scan the entire drive looking for any possible segments of data. This takes considerably longer, but may reveal data that would have otherwise been permanently lost.
