Floppy Recovery
Although floppy diskettes have largely been phased out of production, large quantities of important data still remain on floppies. Floppies were the standard for several years, and because of this, many individuals and companies have had to transfer vast quantities of information off of this medium. Although floppy diskettes were fairly reliable, especially when compared to easily scratched CDs, they are still susceptible to data corruption.
Data corruption on a floppy disk can be extremely disheartening, especially when the information contained on the disk is very important.
Fortunately, there are a variety of free utilities available that can reverse damage to floppy disks. Floppy recovery is usually as easy as downloading a free utility like Active@ Floppy Recovery. Active@ allows disks to be read that Windows views as corrupted. When Windows prompts for a disk to be formatted, or says that the format cannot be opened, Active@ may be able to help.
Active@ can extract an image of the disk contents and place it on your local hard drive. The program also supports searching of the contents, allowing you to locate important text or images. Active@ supports floppy recovery from diskettes formatted in FAT-12 and NTFS. The program runs compatibly in Windows 95 through XP. The utility can be downloaded for free, with the only limitation on the program being a 32 KB cap on the size of files that can be recovered.
Another option in the floppy recovery market is BadCopy Pro. This program has the added advantage of working with more than just floppy disks. With BadCopy Pro you can recover CDs, DVDs, and floppy disks. Any problem regarding “bad sectors” or unreadable volumes can typically be solved by BadCopy Pro. The program reads through the contents of a corrupted floppy disk and searches for viable files, which it then exports onto a selected folder on the hard drive.
These utilities are a free, simple way to restore old floppy disks. Although floppy disk drives may not be the standard anymore, there is still plenty of data floating around out there in this format. A great deal of it no longer works properly, having fallen into a corrupted state after years of dust and neglect. Luckily, a lot of these problems can be corrected with minimal file loss. If you have a set of floppy disks that aren’t working anymore, given floppy recovery a try with some of these utilities. You may be surprised at how many of these floppies can actually be restored.
Although most of these floppy recovery utilities are designed specifically for floppies, some may include extended abilities, such as the restoration of files lost on the hard drive. Be sure to look into the full abilities of any software package, especially if you are purchasing one. Many utilities combine far more than just floppy recovery.
