File Recovery

The files kept on any hard drive can be very valuable, and it is potentially devastating to lose that information if it is not properly backed up. The loss of critical files can set work back weeks on a project, or result in losing a paper that’s due the next day. Either of these scenarios are just examples of the hardship that hard drive failure can bring. This can happen to any computer, and is a more frequent occurrence than you might think. Unlike the other components of your computer, the hard drive is based on moving mechanical parts. As with any mechanical system, the potential for error is always present.

Luckily, there are tools available to correct such errors and retrieve lost data. The simplest and most common file recovery is done to retrieve files that have been accidentally deleted. This is something that can be taken care of a with a free utility downloaded over the internet. The task is relatively simple because of the way file systems function on a personal computer. When a file is intentionally deleted, the data does not actually disappear at that moment. The operating system simply marks that data as erasable, meaning other data can take its place at any time.

Because of this, it is very important to recover an accidentally deleted file as soon as possible. If you lose a file, immediately attempt to recover it. Do not create or save anything to the hard drive before the file is recovered, as it may overwrite your data. Time is of the essence, and if you cannot find a file recovery program at the moment, shut down your computer until you have time to do so.

There are a multitude of file recovery programs available on the internet. More basic applications are usually available in free or shareware versions, with commercial programs offering greater functionality. Handy Recovery 4.0 is a user friendly application with several file recovery options, including recovery of files lost due to drive corruption or formatting. DiskInternals Uneraser 3.7 is another well received product that prides itself on a very simple interface, making file recovery quick and easy.

Files can be lost for a number of reasons. Many files are simply deleted by accident, and luckily, those are easy to recover with most free tools on the internet. FreeUndelete 2.0 is one such freeware tool that can easily recover accidentally deleted files on an NTFS or FAT32 drive. Drive corruption is a somewhat more difficult problem to recover from, but many affordable tools are available that can bring back these lost files.

One of the easiest solutions to file recovery is simply to backup the most important files you have. Although recovery tools have come a long way, it is still simpler and safer to have additional copies of your most important files on a seperate drive, USB stick, or CD.
