Computer Recovery

The computer has become an integral part of daily life for many people, and as such it can be a serious problem when that interaction is interrupted.  Computer parts have generally become more and more reliable over the years, but the weak link in the chain remains the hard drive.  Whereas most of the computer relies on electrical connections, the hard drive remains a mechanical device.  As a mechanical system, the hard drive is particularly susceptible to wear and tear.  A hard drive almost always becomes faulty after it has been used for several years.

Hard drive failure is more a question of when, rather than if.

Restoring a computer to working order after a hard drive failure is very easy, but recovering the data on that drive may be more difficult.  The easiest in home solution for computer recovery is to take the bad drive and install it in another computer.  For this to work, the other computer must have an open slot and IDE cable to connect with.  Once the computer is started, it may be as simple as copying and pasting the old files over.  This can be the case if a drive partition has been overwritten or damaged.  This means that the data on the drive is still good, but the operating system cannot find the necessary partition to work from that drive.

This is the best case scenario in computer recovery.  In such situations, it is easy to use freeware tools available on the internet to restore previously lost data.  There are a number of such freeware programs, like Recover My Files, sometimes available on a trial basis.  These programs are incredibly powerful, and can work to recover files even after a drive has been formatted or partitioned.  Simply install the drive in another computer and let the tools do the work.

In some cases, however, not even the best computer recovery software can help.  If a hard drive has failed because its read/write heads have died, it will be impossible to copy data over using software.  In this instance, professional data recovery services are required.  Services such as DriveSavers can often charge upward of a thousand dollars to restore a damaged disk.

Computer recovery is a booming business, and there are many services and products to choose from.  Programs like Undelete Plus are often times offered as freeware, allowing simple recovery operations to be done for free.  This is usually the case with simpler problems, such as accidental deletions.  Even after a file is emptied from the recycle bin, it continues to exist on the hard drive.  Caught early enough, a tool such as Undelete Plus can scan the drive for recently deleted files and bring them back to life with no problem.
